Half Term Information Summer 1 2026

This term we have been learning about habitats and the local world around us. We went on an exploratory walk around our school grounds to identify things that were living, non-living and once-living. We also searched for evidence of habitats and microhabitats in our playground and field. It was fascinating to discover the clues that showed just how many different animals – especially minibeasts – use our local environment as their homes.

Whilst exploring maps and habitats, we also had the opportunity to visit the Cambourne Nature Reserve. During our visit, we enjoyed exploring the natural environment and identifying the different types of habitats around us. The children showed great enthusiasm as they spotted a variety of living things and discussed why different animals and plants thrive in particular habitats.

In Geography, we explored maps of the local area and identified amenities that help our community, such as doctors, police stations, local parks and, of course, Morrison’s! We then built upon our previous learning by sketching maps of our classroom complete with keys. We carefully considered which features were important to include and explained the reasons for our choices. Following this, we used positional and directional language to explain verbally, and later write down, how to navigate our maps.

In Art, we learned about architects by sketching and colouring buildings. We also carved brick designs into Styrofoam blocks and used paint to create printed brick and tile patterns. To bring the unit together, we designed and created our own 3D maps of Cambourne, including printed façades inspired by our work.
