Half term information Autumn 2 2025

We stepped back in time this half term to ‘The Great War’, the children were really engaged in the topic and our trip to the Great War Huts gave us a fully immersive experience of life in the trenches. During our learning on this fascinating topic, we explored the conditions that the soldiers had to endure in the trenches of the Western Front, as well as the actions that started World War One. Using the book ‘War Games’ as the stimulus, the famous story of the 1914 Christmas truce was retold in English, along with other written pieces including a non-chronological report on trenches and a letter home from the trenches.

In Maths, we have spent most of the half term covering various elements of fractions, including equivalent fractions, converting between improper and mixed numbers (and vice versa), and multiplying and dividing fractions.

In science, the children have enjoyed learning all about light including how light travels, reflection and light phenomena. A highlight of the unit was making mini periscopes.

The children enjoyed tag ruby and hockey during our Wednesday afternoon PE slot. We have also continued with our daily run, which we have found has really helped the children to focus on their learning for the rest of the morning.

Quotes from the children about their learning:

Abdelrahman: “I am still enjoying the daily run and I liked holding real First World War rifles on our school trip to The Great War Huts.”

Emily M: “I enjoyed learning how to play tag rugby and fractions in maths.”

James: “I have enjoyed hockey in PE and learning about fractions.”

Irmak: “I enjoyed our trip to The Great War Huts and playing tag rugby.”

Lydia: “I enjoyed learning about World War One so we can learn not to repeat history.”
