What is AI?
Artificial intelligence is technology that can perform tasks that usually require human thinking. Some AI tools can answer questions, create text or images, translate languages, or recognise patterns. They generate responses based on data and instructions; they do not understand or check information in the same way a person does.
Potential benefits
Used thoughtfully and with adult guidance, AI may help to:
- Make learning resources more accessible, for example by supporting translation or adapting text.
- Offer new ways to explore ideas, create and solve problems.
- Help staff prepare or adapt resources, giving them more time to focus on teaching and supporting children.
These possibilities connect with The Monkfield Way: we love learning together, try our best, and aim to help every child participate and make progress.
Risks and responsible use
AI can be useful, but it also has limitations. It may:
- Give information that is incorrect, incomplete or out of date.
- Reflect unfair assumptions or bias.
- Produce content that is unsuitable for children.
- Create privacy, security or copyright concerns.
- Make it harder to tell whether an image, recording or piece of writing is genuine.
AI-generated content should therefore be checked by a person. AI does not replace teachers’ professional judgement, relationships with children or communication with families.
We will review our approach as technology and guidance develop, keeping children’s safety, privacy and learning at the centre of decisions.
Working together:
Families can support children by talking with them about online information: who created it, whether it can be trusted, and what personal details should remain private. If you have a concern about AI use connected with school, please contact the school office.
Our approach is guided by The Monkfield Way: we learn together, act responsibly and look after ourselves, each other and our community.
