Half term information Autumn 1 2021

Year 4 have had a fantastic first half-term, settling straight into their learning!! We have loved finding out about the Romans. Culminating all our Romans learning with our Roman Wow day where we created shields, swords and helmets. Experienced training like a Roman army and had a mini battle.

Our English work produced some interesting stories set in Pompeii, Leaflets encouraging the reader to visit Londidnium and some truly wonderful Roman Myths.

Our maths focus for the first half term centred on place value and understanding number. Then we moved onto learning formal and informal methods of solving addition and subtraction questions and the vocabulary that is used in word problems for these operations.

We have explored ways to identify, group and classify living things and the children learn how animals are split into categories (eg invertebrates and vertebrates). We also introduced the idea of habitats and how humans are affecting them.

Children’s comments about their learning:

Umer likes Guided reading because the challenges and activities are fun.

Eros liked finding and watching our class snails.

Avyukt loved learning about negative numbers because he enjoyed the idea that as negative numbers got bigger, they were actually smaller.

Caleb really liked our Roman topic because we got to have battle at the end of our Roman Wow day, after we had made our weapons.
