Read Write Inc. Storybook Activities

In your child’s home learning phonics pack you will find three storybooks. These have been provided by the group teacher and carefully match their phonic knowledge and reading ability. One storybook should be used over the course of three or four days.

Reading activities:-

-Read the speed sounds.

-Read the green and red words for the story.

-Ask your child to listen as you read them the story introduction.

-Discuss the vocabulary check with your child. This can be found at the front of the book.

-Read the storybook.

-Re-read the story and discuss the ‘questions to talk about’. These can be found at the back of the book.

-Re-read the story with fluency and expression.

-Practise reading the speed words at the back of the book.

Writing activities:-

-Choose your favourite part/page of the story. Write some short sentences to describe what happens on that page or to explain why it’s your favourite.

-Choose a character from the storybook and draw them at the top of the page. Underneath your drawing, write some words or sentences to describe the character.

-Write a blurb for the storybook to encourage others to read it.

-Write an alternative ending to the story.

-Choose a red word that appears in the story. Write your own sentence which includes the red word. E.g. The witch was short and old.
